NBA Mock Draft #12: Sacramento Kings- RJ Hampton

Hampton decided against playing NCAA basketball and joined the New Zealand Breakers as part of NBL’s Next Stars program. The season did not go as planned. Hampton was limited to just 17 games because of injuries. It likely harmed his draft stock too. The 19-year-old was viewed as a surefire top ten pick at the beginning of the year.

Hampton averaged 9.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes per game over the small sample size this season. He did not shoot the ball well. Hampton connected on just 41.7 percent from the field and 29.4 percent of his threes.

The jump shot is a question mark. He needs to improve in that area especially if the plan is to play him off the ball in NBA. Hampton’s ball-handling and playmaking ability will have teams not wanting to make him a lead guard right away.

By all accounts, he struggled on the defensive end in Australia too. Hampton is 6’5 and has the athletic ability to improve, but it is just not there at this point.

The 19-year-old is a bit of a project, but he has a ton of potential. The Kings could be getting the steal of the 2020 NBA Draft at 12 overall. Hampton needs to improve significantly to reach that ceiling, though.
