Dallas Mavericks defense: Willie Cauley-Stein

Cauley-Stein averaged 4.6 rebounds, 0.3 steals, and 0.8 blocks in 12.1 minutes per over his 13 games with the Mavericks. Those numbers standout on a per-36 basis. He averages 13.8 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 2.5 blocks when expanding out.

WCS has put up strong rebounds, steals, and blocks stats for his entire career. He controls the paint and plays well inside. Cauley-Stein has quick hands that help him create turnovers. The 26-year-old held position and produced for the Mavericks.

The advanced metrics over a small sample are strong. He produced 0.3 defensive win shares with the Mavs. Cauley-Stein also had a defensive box score plus-minus of 2.3 That would rank in the top ten in the NBA if Trill did it over the full season.

Adding in his numbers with the Golden State Warriors, Cauley-Stein is fourth in the NBA in FiveThirtyEight’s defensive RAPTOR this season.

Defensive grade: B+

All the stats are strong, but the sample size has to be factored in. Willie Cauley-Stein produced well in nearly every metric, but it was over just 157 minutes in total. Factoring that in earned WCS a B-plus for his time with the Dallas Mavericks so far.
