How LaMarcus Aldridge’s injury impacts Dallas Mavericks: Spurs rebuild?

Aldridge’s season-ending shoulder surgery could have long-term impacts too. If San Antonio misses the playoffs in Orlando, they could go into rebuilding mode after the season. Fellow All-Star DeMar DeRozan has a player option for $27.7 million next year. No word yet on his plans.

Aldridge turns 35 in July and will be heading into the final season of his contract. Rudy Gay is set to be a free agent in 2021 too. DeRozan opting out plus missing the playoffs could give the Spurs a reason to trade away Aldridge and Gay. That would mean entering a rebuild in hopes of returning title contention over the next five years.

That will be a massive storyline to follow in the offseason. The Spurs have some young pieces, but both their stars are over 30 and heading toward free agency. Now could be the time to blow it up and rebuild. Keep an eye on what they decide to do.
