Dallas Mavericks offense: Dwight Powell

It is easy to forget that Dwight Powell missed the entire preseason and first three regular season games with a strained hamstring. He ramped up slowly from there. Powell started the Mavericks 13th game and was in the opening five every night until he tore his Achilles.

The 28-year-old averaged 9.4 points and 1.5 assists in 26.5 minutes per game this season. He shot 63.8 percent from the field, 25.6 percent on his 3-pointers, and 66.7 percent from the foul line.

Powell played a lesser offensive role than he had in the past. He was still used as a roll man and vertical spacer. The Mavericks had more scoring punch all around him. DP took his easy buckets or deferred to teammates.

The numbers improved as the year went on. Over his final 24 games (excluding the contest against the Clippers where he was injured in the first quarter), Powell averaged 11.1 points and 1.6 assists in 28.1 minutes per.

The advanced metrics were favorable for Powell. His effective field goal percentage of 65.9 would have ranked fourth in the NBA if he played enough games to qualify. Powell produced 2.6 offensive win shares which sat 66th. His offensive box score plus-minus would have ranked in the top-100 if he played enough to qualify.

Offensive grade: B+

Dwight Powell is a fantastic offensive player in his role. He does not try to do too much. It allows him to have one of the top field goal percentages in the NBA. That steadiness in his role earned Powell a B-plus grade.
