Defense

Seth Curry’s defensive numbers do not jump off the page. He averaged 2.4 rebounds, 0.6 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game this season. Curry produced over one steal a night in his first run with the Dallas Mavericks. He could not repeat that, though.

Curry is not going to be in the running for defensive player of the year, but he shows effort and energy. Coach Rick Carlisle and the Mavs do well at finding him matchups to succeed in. He is not getting roasted at any point.

The advanced metrics are not in his favor. Curry produced 0.9 defensive win shares which ranked 209th in the NBA. His negative 0.7 defensive box score plus-minus was 129th. ESPN’s defensive real plus-minus ranked him 409th of 503 players.

Two of the three put him above league average. That is a fair estimate. The 29-year-old is not locking down elite scorers, but he is not actively hurting the Dallas Mavericks either.

Defensive grade: B-

Seth Curry makes his bones on the offensive end of the floor, but that does not mean he struggles on defense. Curry’s energy and effort plus some solid matchmaking allowed him to earn a B-minus for his defense.
