4. Porzingis trade

The Dallas Mavericks were 22-27 when they traveled to New York to face the Knicks on Jan. 30, 2019. They dominated the Knicks that night, but something more important was happening behind the scenes. Donnie Nelson and the front office was working with the Knicks brass on the Kristaps Porzingis trade.

The next day it went down. The Mavericks traded away Dennis Smith Jr, Wesley Matthews, DeAndre Jordan, and two first round picks to acquire Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr, Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke. It was a massive shift for the Mavs. DSJ was a lottery pick in 2017 and a building block for the team. Now, he was in New York.

Must Read. Why the Mavs won the Kristaps Porzingis trade

The Mavericks committed to constructing the squad around Luka Doncic. They viewed Porzingis as the perfect fit with his skill set. Dallas traded Harrison Barnes to free up some cap space for the summer just days later. That meant they moved all four starters to reshape their roster around a 19-year-old.

The Porzingis trade set up the team’s success this season. It was a massive moment for Luka because it made him the cornerstone of the Mavericks. Doncic immediately proved worth by averaging 22.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per over the final 23 games he played in last season.
