Dallas Mavericks: Why the Mavs should trade for Robert Covington
By Tyler Watts
5. 3-point shooting
The Dallas Mavericks love to fire away from 3-point range. They take 41.0 attempts per game from deep which is second in the NBA. The Mavs are also eighth in 3-point percentage hitting 36.4 percent for the season.
Consider this, Tim Hardaway Jr, Maxi Kleber, Dorian Finney-Smith, Ryan Broekhoff, and J.J. Barea are all shooting career-high 3-point percentages. The Mavs are either the luckiest team in the league or Luka’s constant attack on the rim is leaving his supporting cast wide-open. Since moving into the starting five, THJ is shooting 43.1 percent from downtown. Doncic is getting them open and finding them.
Now add in Robert Covington, a 6’7 forward capable of playing multiple positions. He is a career 36.0 percent 3-point shooting. Last season, Covington sank 39.4 percent of his 193 catch-and-shoot attempts from downtown. Put him on the court with Luka Doncic, and his percentage could push even higher.
Covington has struggled a bit on his 3-pointers this season. He is hitting 35.6 percent. The Wolves have lacked strong point guard play, though. Jeff Teague has dealt with injuries and was recently traded to the Hawks. Karl-Anthony Towns has also missed time. Fans should not worry for a second about Covington’s shot.
RoCo would provide a significant boost to the Mavericks in their 3-point shooting because he is capable of hitting open shots and will not hesitate to fire.
