Guards

Wesley Matthews– Matthews is coming off his second season in Dallas where he had somewhat of a roller coaster of a season. Sitting at the halfway point of his contract, Matthews is one of the more vocal leaders on the team and is one of the best wing defenders in the game.

He is slated to make $17.8 million next season with a player option for the 2018-19 season. If Dallas decides to go even younger, entertaining the trade market for Wesley Matthews might be an option, but my bet is that Matthews is back next season.

Seth Curry– Dallas took the chance on the younger Curry brother and he took advantage of the opportunity. Curry appeared in 70 games for the Mavericks and put up career numbers across the board.

He has an excellent cap number at $3 million for next season. I would keep an eye on this situation though. If Dallas is unsure about investing financially into Curry next summer, then you could hear some trade grumblings as the season progresses.

Will Curry come in as the starting point guard this season? Will he shift into a Jason Terry type role for the Mavericks? He will be on the team, but his position moving forward is up in the air.

Yogi Ferrell– Yogi was a sensational find for Dallas this season and proved he can be a fill-in starter whenever he is needed. He has a $1.3 team option for next season that will be picked up immediately.

Depending on how Dallas addresses the offseason at point guard or Seth Curry’s future position, Ferrell could be the opening night starter this fall.

J.J. Barea– Barea missed time due to injury this season, but was effective when he was on the court. The 32-year-old Barea still has around $8 million left over the next two years. Barring a trade, Barea will be back as a primary backup next year.

Devin Harris– Harris enters his 14th year in the league where he has a team option for $4.4 million for next year. My gut says the veteran will not be back next year as the team continues to get younger.

DeAndre Liggins– Liggins literally played in one game for Dallas, the very last game of the season. The 29-year-old point guard has a $1.3 million team option for next year. He has a very short period over the summer to prove to Dallas he is worthy of picking up. My guess is that Liggins is not on the roster next season.
