Six Reasons Dallas Should Max Out Harrison Barnes

5.) Comparing Him to the Market

With the salary cap taking an enormous leap this offseason, the talk around the sports world has been the massive contracts given out to players around the league.

Barnes would come into Dallas with a starting salary of around $22 million a year over four years. Compared to some other contracts given out, Dallas could have done much worse.

Ryan Anderson will make $20 million in Houston, Evan Turner $18 million in Portland, and Joakim Noah $18 million in New York. I’m good with paying Harrison Barnes a little bit more than them.

You could even go a step farther and look at converting his contract into last season’s cap at $70 million. Under last season’s cap, Barnes would have made around $16 million on the season. You would have to think fans would have been totally ok with handing him that money. Now the salary cap has risen over $20 million and his $22 million contract would take up the same percent of cap.
