For the second time in a row, the Dallas Mavericks preferred free agency target at center has elected to stay with his incumbent team. In an article for The Players’ Tribune Hassan Whiteside declared his intention to remain with the Miami Heat beyond this summer.

Per ESPN’s Marc Stein the Mavericks wooed Whiteside in New York last night. Although no reports on exact figures were made, it is likely that Dallas and Marc Cuban offered Whiteside a four-year contract for his full max starting at about 22 million a year.  But after the team looked like the frontrunner in the early hours of free agency, the Miami Heat apparently gained ground in their meeting with the 27-year old.

In the early hours of the morning Whiteside then published a statement declaring his intention to remain with the Miami Heat. The contract details are unclear as of yet.

In a statement for the Players’ Tribune, Whiteside wrote:

"I’ve played on eight teams since college — from Reno to Sioux Falls to Sichuan, China.I am not ready for there to be a ninth.I have decided to re-sign with Miami. I just wanted to take this time to tell all the fans how much you mean to this team, and to me.Can’t wait to get back to work and try to bring another championship to Miami. #HeatNation"

With Nicolas Batum reportedly agreeing on a 5-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets the Mavericks have now missed out on two of their three primary targets in the early days of free agency. If they can manage a quick turn around and convince Mike Conley to sign with them remains to be seen.
