The Dallas Mavericks have added former Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt to Rick Carlisle coaching staff.

According to the Mavericks, Shyatt will work with the big men.

Shyatt is known for his defensive brilliance. In 2014-2015, his Wyoming squad ranked 7th in the NCAA for points allowed per game. The most notable player he has recently coached is Larry Nance Jr – the first Wyoming player to ever be drafted.

On a day that has been disappointing concerning free agency, the Mavericks bring on a coach that has a similar approach and philosophy as Rick Carlisle – defense first, hustle and work ethic.

It is widely expected that Shyatt will focus on the Mavericks most recent draftee, A.J. Hammons, a 7’0 center known for his rebounding and blocking skills, but questioned over his “motor” and work ethic.

Additionally, the Mavericks announced that the entire assistant crew from 2015-2016 will return this season.
