Why the Dallas Mavericks Should Pursue Dwight Howard

1. Potential
As I mentioned before, Dwight Howard is chock full of potential. His size, athleticism, and experience should be a nightmare for any team that faces up against him, but lately it has almost been a relief to see him on the opposing team.
Often times, NBA teams need to do crazy things to make great things happen. This could be one of those decisions for Dallas as a big name player could have a trickle-down effect for the organization. A player like Dwight Howard would have a chance to revitalize his career here as well which has been something that other players have had success doing (see Deron Williams).
On top of that, Howard is a low-risk pursuit. In the past, the Mavericks have chased big name centers with hopes of improving at the position. However, during that process they allowed the best center in Mavericks history to walk away, twice. To add salt to that wound, we also were unable to land either of those targeted centers and were left in a sea of disarray trying to replace them.
This time would be different for Dallas. Our starting center for much of the season, Zaza Pachulia, is widely considered a backup center at his best and is certainly not at the same level as the elite players of the league. So the risk of losing Zaza is far lower than what it was when we lost Tyson Chandler.
To top it all off, Dallas also has a player they are very excited about in Salah Mejri who could benefit from working with Dwight Howard, as well as quickly step into a backup role if we were to lose Pachulia in the process. In other words, the player risks are far lower than they have been in the past.
