Early Christmas Presents and a Lump of Coal

First off, Merry Christmas! Here’s hoping for peace on earth, good will towards all, and a victory for your team!

In this time of Holiday Spirit gifts can be found in many shapes and sizes; sometimes they might not even be something tangible that you can hold. Such is the type of gifts that the Dallas Mavericks gave their fans prior to Christmas Day.

Gift Number One- potential

Sunday night they were without their MVP candidate and perennial all-star Dirk Nowitzki as he recovered from the laceration he got on his elbow (along with two of Carl Landry’s teeth) against the Rockets two nights earlier. With Lebron James, Shaq Daddy, and the Cleveland Cavaliers coming into town it would not have been much of a surprise to see the Cavaliers run away with this one. However, instead of laying down the rest of the Mavericks decided to show what they could do without their leader.

Tim Thomas quit throwing Moons Over My Hammies all over Denny’s long enough to start in place of Dirk and lead the team with 22 points. Jason Kidd got the only double-double on the night notching 11 assists and 10 points on the night. After being down one after the first period, the team rallied to 2 point halftime lead on the way to a 7 point victory. Five players scored in double figures as the mavericks put in a tremendous team effort in the process of winning their 20th game of the season.

Gift Number Two- Dirk Returns

As expected, Nowitzki reeturned to the lineup Tuesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers. He looked none the worse for wear as he turned in another solid performance as he was a single board away from a double- double with 27 points and 9 rebounds. Regretfully they also got a lump of coal that night as well- a 4 point loss, 81-85, as they rallied from 11 down at the half to take a 7 point lead into the 4th only to see that dwindle away.

There next match up will not be until after Christmas. They play the Grizzlies at home on Saturday.
