Love me some Dirk. I really love me some Dirk. Nowitzki. Saturday night was the first of four games the Dallas Mavericks will being playing without starting forward Dirk Nowitzki. So far, so good. The Mavs left New Orleans with an 83-81 lead with Dirk on the sideline in his Sunday best. The Dallas Mavericks began their new season with an exhibition against the Oklahoma City Thunder.  Although the Mavs ended up on the losing end, this was not a game about wins and loses.  The absence of both Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd sent that message loud and clear.  This game was not even about working in the new team members with the returning players.  This game, apparently, was about conditioning and getting the younger players some quality minutes.

As the lockout came to an end, the brain-trust of the Dallas Mavericks had some serious decisions to make about their roster. They made the difficult decision not to sign Tyson Chandler to a big contract, opting instead to do a sign-and-trade with the Knicks. But Chandler was not the only member of the team’s first championship team who would not be coming back.

This NBA off-season did not have the suspense and drama that was the LeBron James sweepstakes. Once the owners and players came to an agreement, and the lockout was ended, there were no big fish for NBA owners to reel in. Most of the attention has been paid to the trade demands of Chris Paul and Dwight Howard. Lost in the shuffle were several shrewd signings, and trades, that will play a crucial role in the success of several teams. When last we met, there was great concern that there may not be an NBA season. Both the players and owners seemed determined to stand their ground, refusing to that the other side had any legitimate point. I was in the midst of moving, beginning a new job, with increased responsibilities, squeezing blogging about basketball out of my life.

The NBA 2011 draft is just two days away.  While the NBA draft does not have the coverage or excitment of their NFL counterparts, it is the last bit of NBA action we will have for some time.  The NBA has already cancelled the summer league, a sign that the impending lockout will become a reality.  Great.  Another sport locked in a greedy grab for millions between millionaires and billionaires.  The result will almost assuredly be higher prices for the average joe hoping to watch some sports while trying to relax from a hard day’s work.  But I digress.  There is basketball to discuss!

The off-season is here.  The NBA draft is coming up but this is not what most people are talking  about.  The collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at the end of June.  Many teams are reportedly losing millions of dollars.  We are being told that the owners are prepared to take a hard stand, needing to do so in order to keep the league going.  Speculation is that much of the season could be lost with both sides refusing to budge.  Lets hope that is not going to happen.
