With the drafting of Dennis Smith Jr., is this the start of something new for the Dallas Mavericks?

Raise your hand if you were ecstatic that the Dallas Mavericks selected 9th in this year’s stacked draft.

After all, many moons and offseasons have passed since this last occurred. Dallas last picked in the top-10 in 1998, drafting Robert “Tractor” Traylor 6th (U. of Michigan).

On one hand, you can say the Mavs’ success (1 losing season since 2000-01) has afforded them the luxury of not necessarily needing the draft. However, it’s no secret that the front office hasn’t exactly been a proponent of building through the draft. Showing limited faith in young talent, drafting is seen as inconsequential.

Allow me to clarify.

It’s not so much a matter of if or who the Mavericks draft. It’s more so the lack of utilization of those picks that causes concern. Relying heavily on veteran players can get you only so far.

With the career of Mavericks cornerstone, Dirk Nowitzki, coming to an end, it would behoove Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson to explore the option of competing while re-building through the draft.

Perhaps seeing the success of a team like Golden State can make their antiquated ideology a thing of the past in Dallas.

Fortunately, this year’s draft class was stockpiled with franchise-changing impact players. Dallas’ selection of NC State point guard Dennis Smith is sure to restore hope and trust in the hearts and minds of Mavs fans.

An organization that is willing to explore new methods in order to sustain success is beyond commendable. Mavericks fans are in good hands. Regardless if you agree with the selection or not, rest assure that the future is bright.

We can all agree that following the draft, free agency is an extremely pivotal time period for Dallas.
