The need for a point guard is one the Dallas Mavericks have been aware of for months and the one that will most likely be addressed early in the offseason by Dallas. It does come with its pros and cons but, should the Mavs pursue Kyle Lowry?

Every once and awhile, the NBA opens up opportunities that a team may never have believed to exist. If you truly need examples then we can look at LeBron James to Miami, Kevin Durant to Golden State, or my personal favorite, trading Robert Traylor to the Bucks for Dirk Nowitzki.

This opportunity is nowhere near that level, but its certainly something we should talk about.

Kyle Lowry, currently with the Toronto Raptors, appears to be fed up with the team he is on. A 3-time NBA All-Star, Lowry has a player option to become a free agent this summer and, according to Marc Stein, he will be exercising that right.

Now I will explain to you why this makes sense for the Dallas Mavericks.

Kyle Lowry is an excellent point guard. He is not just good, he is great. Coming off a season where he averaged 22 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists per game, Lowry would step in and be the immediate offense that the Mavericks need so badly.

This move would make great sense for Kyle Lowry who wants a new scene with a good team and an opportunity to still be one of the best players on the court. Dallas fits that bill as they look to make a return to the NBA playoffs in the upcoming season.

Lowry is a major scoring threat on the court, but he is also an excellent passer, a combination that works great in Carlisle’s system and something that players like Harrison Barnes and Seth Curry, who are not quite as good at creating their own shots, will really appreciate.

Also, Stein reported that Lowry may look to move to the West anyways.

The one downside to this whole thing may honestly be Mavs fans. The fans have grown so accustomed to missing out on the big name free agents that it is not even a desire to chase them anymore. Especially with the high draft pick and the great draft class, most people want the Mavs to skip free agency and just focus on draft.

This has become such a problem that Mark Cuban has even stated that Dallas would not be pursuing any big name free agents. Although I understand the mental torture that comes along with the free agency process, this seems a bit foolish as a general overarching idea.

I am not a GM, I am not an owner, and I am certainly not a head coach. However, I believe that there has to be a better way for the Mavericks to address the free agency class than avoiding anyone with a high dollar price tag. If players were really interested in coming to Dallas, I think they will communicate it to the team.

(Exceptions possibly for when the Mavericks “bully” free agents into making a decision immediately…DeAndre.)

For that reason, it does not make sense for Dallas to completely overlook the big names of free agency. Feelers should be put out with these guys to see if they are even interested in coming to the Mavs. It can’t hurt and we don’t have to put all of our eggs into one basket.

The entirety of NBA Free Agency is screwed up enough that we could have a whole different conversation about that, but today I won’t get into it. All I’m saying is, we should at talk to Lowry before completely writing him off.

The Dallas Mavericks are in need of a point guard and there will be options for the team all over the place. It just depends on if we are willing to explore them or not.
