The Dallas Mavericks Should Look at Milos Teodosic

The Dallas Mavericks could be looking for a new point guard this season and Milos Teodosic could be coming to the NBA. Could Dallas be a fit?

This past summer, at the Rio Olympics, most of the United States was introduced to arguably the best passer in the world, Milos Teodosic.

Milos led a Serbian charge that beat out France and Spain for the Silver medal after getting beat by the United States. When they played the United States in the group stage, Milos matched up with Kyrie Irving where he logged 18 points and six assists.

But he’s been playing at a high level for many years now.

Playing for CSKA Moscow, Milos has his share of fans within NBA front offices.

In the latest NBA GM survey in the Fall of 2016, Milos was ranked as the best international player not in the NBA by a landslide. Milos was at 53.6% while Sergio Llull was at 28.6% and Nando De Colo at 14.3%.

Now, after spending the past six seasons playing for CSKA Moscow, Teodosic has a decision to make as he is now a free agent. Come to the NBA or stay overseas?

“On March 19 I became 30 years of age and I know this is going to be a key decision for my career,” Teodosic said in his personal blog on Eurohoops.net.

"“It’s true that I’m seriously thinking about the possibility of the NBA, but nothing has transpired yet, and nothing will until the summer. I’ve said before that, in order for me to go to the USA, a team has to meet both my competitive ambitions – which is the most important thing – and everything that has to do with the financial aspect as well as the aspect of the length of my contract,” Teodosic said about his future on his blog."

At 30 years old and in the prime of his career, if Teodosic was ever going to come to the NBA, it is now.

His Serbian teammate, Nikola Jokic, smiled when he was asked about Teodosic at All-Star weekend and had some insight to the situation in which Teodosic would come to the NBA for.

It’s pretty simple it sounds for Milos. If he is going to make the jump to the NBA, he wants the opportunity to play a lot and the financial security to make it worth it. Which is completely understandable for a guy at this point in his career.

Milos is known for his exceptional passing, but his scoring ability gets overlooked at times. He can get to the basket off the dribble while also having a nice touch from the outside, especially off the dribble.

You can see that scoring touch, along with his passing ability, in this highlight clip just over the past year at CSKA Moscow.

Over the past couple of months, Sean Marks and the Brooklyn Nets have been rumored to really be considering the possibility of making a run at Teodosic this summer despite having Jeremy Lin under contract.

So should Dallas make a run at him this summer?

I say absolutely, but only if they don’t land a point guard in the upcoming draft.

If for some reason Dallas does not land a point guard in the upcoming draft, they will be left to free agency to try and shore up their back court. With the likes of Stephen Curry, Kyle Lowry and Chris Paul probably out of reach, they could be left fighting for players like Jeff Teague and Patty Mills.

If that is the case, I want Dallas to make a run at Teodosic.

I will say this, I have no clue what it will cost to bring Milos to the NBA. If it turns into a bidding war with years and money, then someone like Brooklyn could win the battle. But if Milos wants a chance at a winning season, then someone like Dallas would be more appealing.

The 6’5″ wizard at point guard would immediately come in as the starter if Dallas elects to move Seth Curry to the sixth man type of role. The brilliance of Teodosic, combined with the brilliance of Carlisle, could be something special to watch.

Teodosic being 30 years old might make some hesitate, but Jeff Teague will be 29 years old this summer along with Patty Mills at 28. So it’s not like Teodosic would come in as some old veteran for just a couple of years.

I love the game of Teodosic and can’t wait to see him in the league. If Dallas misses on a point guard in the draft, they should make the call to Teodosic’s camp.
