After Anderson Varejao was traded to Portland in the trade that landed Channing Frye in Cleveland, Varejao now finds himself bought out and on the free agent market. Is he on the Dallas Mavericks radar?

The Cleveland Cavaliers were rumored to be in the running for Channing Frye before the trade deadline as the Orlando Magic were considering offers from other teams on where to dump Frye’s contract. After much debate, they agreed on a deal to send Frye to Cleveland where the Cavs made a tough decision to let go of long time favorite Anderson Varejao.

Varejao was one of LeBron James favorite and closest teammates over his time in Cleveland. After spending all 12 seasons of his career in Cleveland, he wasn’t happy to the news of being unloaded at the deadline.

Now the Brazilian finds himself on the free agent market with his choice of teams to join. After having a couple of injury riddled years, Varejao was once a double-double machine for the Cavs from 2011-13. Recently, he has been regulated to the professional veteran presence on the bench that all teammates speak highly of.

So with a veteran big man on the market, what teams have shown interest in the Brazilian?

Marc Stein of ESPN is reporting that the Warriors, Thunder, Spurs, and Mavericks are “eying” Varejao as he looks to clear waivers  after being waived by Portland.

“Sources say the Mavericks, meanwhile, indeed have interest in Varejao even though they’re already widely considered to be in pole position to sign fellow buyout recipient David Lee, who negotiated his release Friday from the Boston Celtics.” -Stein

It would be interesting to see what the Mavericks would do if they decided to bring in both Lee AND Varejao. With the Mavs already having to cut someone if they bring in Lee, it would be interesting to see if they decided to cut another front court player or John Jenkins.

We will continue to monitor this situation as it unfolds, but consider the Mavs a long shot to bring in Varejao at the moment.
