What should Mavericks do in the 2015 NBA Draft?

The NBA draft is slated for Thursday, June 25th and the Dallas Mavericks, with the 21st and 52nd picks in the draft, will have a chance to either add a key piece to the roster or wast another selection.

Trade up, trade down, trade out of the draft, select a point guard….there are so many scenarios for the Mavs, as always, and all eyes are on them to finally make a positive move in the draft.

After the Roddy Beaubois hype fizzled and Shane Larkin, Dominique Jones, and Jared Cunningham not lasting long, we look to cure the Mavs draft woes.

What should the Mavericks do in the 2015 draft?

Daniel Devine: I’m big on the Mavs taking best available PG with the 21st pick. If they could move up to draft Cameron Payne, I’d suggest looking into that. If they get stuck with 21 I personally prefer Tyus Jones, but Jerian Grant would also be a fine option.

An ideal scenario if the Mavs could pull it off would be trying to reach out and acquire a PG like George Hill or Ty Lawson whom are both rumored to be available and at possibly discounted prices.

Aaron Clements:  Draft a point guard. After the inevitable departure of Rajon Rondo, this team will need a young floor general who can run the offense intelligently and change the pace when necessary. This draft has a number of promising point guards, and the Mavs should capitalize on the opportunity. It would be nice to get Jerian Grant, but Tyus Jones or Cameron Payne are more realistic options for the 21st pick.

Jason Lee: Keep the pick. Trading it up might be useful to get somebody the front office really like but would affect the already complicated cap space situation later in free agency.

As to trading it down … please we’ve had enough of Jarred Cunninghams these past few years. As for my pick, it’s not a secret around the community how I love Elfrid Payton’s game (I see you Rondo). And I think Cameron Payne from Murray State has much the same way I feel on Payton. But he’s been mocked anywhere from the lottery to the mid 20’s and it would be difficult to pick him at 21st. So the Plan B should be Duke’s Tyus Jones.

Charles Hughes: The only things I don’t want them to do are trade down or draft a combo guard without any real above average NBA skills (stay strong JFlight!) A lot of this depends on other factors, if they plan to resign Barea, if Monta returns ect. I don’t know if it makes that much sense to draft another point guard as there’s not many minutes left over, and if Monta comes back they don’t necessarily need someone to run the team as he and Parsons are more than capable of being the primary playmakers.

I don’t think the pick will have a major impact next season, but could in future years, so I’d just say go for the best talent still on the board and try to develop some in house talent

Kieran Hairell: This year? I say keep it. I hear a lot of talk about how the Mavericks don’t value the draft. You know what they do value? Development. Mavs “role” players are littering NBA teams right now. Maybe some of these names ring a bell: Crowder, Bass, Wright, Larkin … The list goes on. Not to mention Carlisle’s pedigree for placing coaches. Even if we don’t get Tyus Jones, the Mavs will certainly draft a diamond in the rough. Keep it, draft, and trade the talent later.

Jay Knodell: They should keep it and draft a point guard. Sounds like Tyus Jones has caught their attention, and he’d be fine with me. Some other options include Jerian Grant and Cameron Payne – should they fall that far –  and Delon Wright.

I’ve always liked Wright. His unreliable jumper is the reason he’s likely to be available in the later part of the first round though, and that doesn’t jive with Rick Carlisle‘s offense or the way the league is trending as a whole. Then again, if Monta Ellis remains with the team Wright’s size (6’6″) and defensive skills would be a great fit alongside him.

Rami Michail: I’m all over the place with this pick due to so many possibilities. But there are three thoughts I have

  1. Trade the pick for a vet point guard: Ty Lawson, George Hill
  2. If Sam Dekker or Cameron Payne slides to 21, take them.
  3. R.J. Hunter would be my pick over the point guards.

So much noise has been made of the Mavs selecting a point guard in this draft. If it isn’t Payne, I’m just not sure Rick Carlisle will allow a rookie point guard to be a factor on this team. So the team trading the pick for an established vet would probably be much more beneficial. If Mavs keep it, they need to add someone who has upside and can help the team this season. Easier said than done with the Mavs, but this team is overdue for a good selection.
