Raymond Felton Begins Suspension, Can He Contribute Upon Return?

Point guard Raymond Felton will begin his four-game suspension Monday during the Mavericks’ game against the Charlotte Hornets. Felton, whose suspension stemmed from weapons charges in New York during his time with the Knicks, suffered a high ankle sprain during the second game of the preseason and was unable to begin the suspension until he returned to practice.

Acquired in the trade that brought in Tyson Chandler, the nine-year veteran will be eligible for game action November 24th against the Indiana Pacers.

But with the Mavs’ deep backcourt rotation it’s unclear what Felton’s role will be once he is eligible. Starter Jameer Nelson has underwhelmed, but reserve guards Devin Harris and JJ Barea have mostly played well. Felton is already starting behind the 8-ball with his suspension and injury, and he may not be in the Mavs’ plans at all.

When the Mavs netted Chandler, Felton was a throw-in. They were forced to take on his contract to get the man they wanted. But it’s possible Rick Carlisle can resurrect his career. Felton isn’t a great shooter, but has been effective getting to the rim in pick-and-roll situations. He attempted more field goals in the restricted area than anywhere else last season.

Playmaking is welcome on any team, and with his career average of 6.5 assists Felton could prove to be useful after all. Chandler Parsons, Richard Jefferson, and Jae Crowder are all effective three-point shooters from the corner. Last season Parsons connected on 43% of his corner threes, Jefferson shot 49%, and Crowder 44%. Felton’s ability to get into the lane could open up opportunities for those three in the corners, an area Dallas did not have much success last season.

We’ll have to wait and see how Carlisle chooses to use Felton, but don’t be surprised if the much maligned point guard turns out to be a contributor in this pick-and-roll heavy offense.
