This was a very bizarre game.
The Mavs entered into the single-elimination summer league tournmanet as the higher seed facing the winless Charlotte Hornets. For three-quarters the Mavs played uninspired basketball, going down by seventeen points in the second half.
However in the fourth quarter, the Mavs finished the game on a 19-5 run and were up two with less than eight seconds to go. Unfortunately, Hornets point guard Roberto Nelson had no intention of being eliminated and hit a game-winning buzzer-beating three over the outstretched hands of two Maverick players.
By far the most entertaining portion of game came from Yuki Togashi. The Mavs’ 5’7 Japanese point guard provided a spark off the bench with 12 points coming off threes and an array of floaters. Togashi quickly became a fan favorite with the crowd chanting “Toga!” every time he touched the ball. His play was the only watchable offense for the Mavs first three-quarters.
Gal Mekel had his best game of this summer league session. He recorded 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists, providing a steady hand for the offense. Unfortunately, Mekel missed a free throw with eight seconds to go that allowed the Hornets three-pointer to beat them.
Conversely, Ricky Ledo had his worst game of the summer league, and maybe his worst game as a pro. Ledo was constantly out of control on his drives to the basket and threw the ball away far too many times. When Ledo’s jumper abandoned him, he should have found other ways to contribute. Instead, he continued to force the issue.
The Mavs will play their final summer league game on Friday at 3:30pm CST against the Phoenix Suns.
- Eric Griffin had no dunks tonight:(
- Chris Goulding had an awesome series of pull-up threes that helped complete the comeback for the Mavs.
- Ivan Johnson was ejected in the third quarter after saying some choice words to an official.
