Dallas Mavericks to acquire Greg Smith from Chicago Bulls

The Dallas Mavericks need to fill their roster and add depth at the center and power forward position. With minimal cap space and limited options, they’ve turned to the trade market.

According to reports, the team will acquire power forward/center Greg Smith from the Chicago Bulls, as the Bulls continue to clear salary cap room to sign free agent Pau Gasol.

Smith, 23, will help the Mavs on the boards. In 89 career games, the 6’10”, 250 pound big-man has averaged 4.1 rebounds to go along with 5.3 points per game.

The three-year veteran has only played with the Houston Rockets throughout his career. He enjoyed his best and healthiest season during the 2012-2013 season, where he averaged 6 points on 62.0% shooting and 4.6 rebounds in 15.9 minutes of action in the 70 games he played.

Smith underwent knee surgery last season that resulted in him playing in just 10 games with the Rockets before being waived. The Bulls would later sign Smith, but he would never play with the team.

If healthy, he should be able to help the team.

DeJuan Blair and Bernard James are currently free agents, leaving only Brandan Wright as the only big body behind starters Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler.

James is reportedly expected back, but this move most likely signals the end of Blair’s time in Dallas.
