Summer League: Mavericks fall to Knicks

As the Dallas Mavericks and New York Knicks got the offseason rolling with the Tyson Chandler trade, these two teams also got the Las Vegas Summer League started.

Game one of the summer league wasn’t a great one for the Dallas side, as they fell 76-64 to the Knicks in the debut of their new coach Derek Fisher.

For the Mavs ‘side, plenty has been made of last season’s second round selection Ricky Ledo. A strong showing from him could go a long way for the Mavs, who are currently lacking depth at the wing position.

Despite only scoring 14 points on 4-14 shooting (5-9 FT) and committing six turnovers, Ledo looked very smooth and comfortable on the court. He showed a natural feel with the ball – he was used as a playmaker – despite the turnovers and tallying just 2 assists. He was constantly initiating the offense and finding open players – team just shot 5-23 from 3.

Outside of Ledo, there wasn’t much to get excited about on the Mavs side. Bernard James had a strong showing of 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks, but that should be expected for the third year veteran against NBA rookies and hopefuls.

Gal Mekel made his on court debut after knee surgery last season and was matched up against former-Mav Shane Larkin. Mekel finished the game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 turnover. Larkin had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 2 turnovers for the Knicks. He also got dunked on by Eric Griffin.

Griffin also added this second dunk.

Former Hawk and possible Mavs signing option Ivan Johnson had a poor outing, tallying just 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 turnovers. Like Larkin, he was also put on a poster. Cleanthony Early highlights the play.

Early, the second round selection by the Knicks, was acquired in Chandler trade as well. He had 13 points in the game. The other second round selection of the Knicks who was also acquired in the trade – Thanasis Antetokounmpo – added 7 points for the Knicks.

The star of the night was Tim Hardaway Jr. The Knicks 2013 first round selection had a game high 25 points.
