Dallas Mavericks Active In The Point Guard Market?

It’s day four of free agency and the Dallas Mavericks have yet to show much for it. They’ve re-signed franchise player Dirk Nowitzki to a three-year deal, pitched to Carmelo Anthony, and spoke with LeBron James agent, but have yet to fill the glaring holes.

Jose Calderon is now in New York and the team is looking to improve the depth at point guard.

Devin Harris is currently not under contract, and ESPNDallas’s Tim McMahon reports the team is confident it will be able to retain him. Also, the team has reportedly been in contract with free agent guards Mo Williams, D.J. Augustine, and Isaiah Thomas.

Point guards Shaun Livingston and Darren Collison have inked larger than expected deals, which could drive up the price on Harris, which can result to his departure.

Raymond Felton, who was acquired along with Tyson Chandler, and little used Gal Mekel are currently the only point guards under contract on the roster.

The team’s primary focus has been filling the vacancy at small forward. Luol Deng and Chandler Parsons have been mentioned as Plan B options for the team. Also, most of the remaining cap may be used at this position, which could lead to the Mavs taking the best and lowest deal at the point guard spot.
