The Dallas Mavericks are dreaming big again this offseason and they’re pursuing NBA free agent and New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony. It doesn’t come as any surprise, but Anthony is the Mavericks priority.
From CBS Sports:
The Mavericks are prioritizing a meeting Wednesday with Knicks free agent Carmelo Anthony in Dallas, trying to persuade the seven-time All-Star to reunite with former teammate Tyson Chandler and Dallas’ own free agent, Dirk Nowitzki. Anthony also locked in meetings with the Bulls on Tuesday, Rockets on Wednesday and Lakers on Thursday. The Knicks will get last licks.
The Mavericks can’t really sign anyone till they know whether they’re bringing Anthony to town or not. The Mavericks should have become pros on pitching the franchise to “big fish” free agents after being in the race every summer, but coming up short.
The difference might be Tyson Chandler this year. As Anthony’s former teammate and friend he knows how to sell the Mavs to the Knicks.
Also while teams had to wait until July 1 to talk to Anthony, players can talk to one another all they want. Chandler could do the Mavs bidding in the meantime. Anthony with a front court of Chandler and Dirk Nowitzki would make the Mavericks Western Conference contenders.
