Dirk Nowitzki content to let Mavs, Mark Cuban pursue free-agent upgrades first

The Dallas Mavericks have a ton of cap space and will be big players in the free agency market. While they pursue big names, they also need to re-sign power forward Dirk Nowitzki.

Entering the twilight years of his career Nowitzki is committed to winning another title and will take a discounted deal to get big names to Dallas. Because of that commitment, Nowitzki will hold off on negotiating his deal until after the free agency picture gets clearer, allowing the Mavericks to work with as much financial flexibility as possible before making his move.

It is a smart move for Nowitzki and once again another shining example of his team first mentality. It also allows Nowtizki to gauge what a fair deal is. Maybe getting more money is the right path if he is carrying the offense again and maybe taking less money is an option if it means bringing in Carmelo Anthony.
