Yesterday reports surfaced of the Dallas Mavericks interest in Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol. According to Tim MacMahom and Marc Stein of ESPNDallas the interest in Gasol is due to the lack of belief in being able to afford and sign Marcin Gortat,
Sources, however, say the Mavericks fear they’ll be priced out of the hunt to pry Gortat from the Wizards, who have ample space under the salary cap and are interested in keeping the 29-year-old Gortat as part of a young core of the team that broke the franchise’s five-year postseason drought and advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Gortat averaged 13.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks this season for the Wizards after being acquired shortly before the season opened from the Phoenix Suns.
His ability in the pick-n-roll and mobility on the defensive end make him a potentially great fit next to the Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki.
Along with Gortat, the Wizards will try hard to keep another potential Dallas target – small forward Trevor Ariza – in Washington.
Gortat holds career averages of 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks; playing with the Orlando Magic, Suns, and Wizards.
