With an estimated $30+ million in cap room, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to be very active in free agency, which starts up July 1st.
Reports have surfaced of Carmelo Anthony opting out of the final deal of his contract with the New York Knicks. While the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets are the early favorites, the Mavericks will still look to sit down and make a pitch to the seven-time All-Star.
Free-agent whisper one week out: Mavs not only expect to have chance to make face-to-face pitch to Melo but also plan to pursue Pau Gasol

While Anthony is a long shot, Pau Gasol could be seen as a real possibility. The Spaniard is coming off a frustrating season for the Los Angeles Lakers; he averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks. His fit next to Dirk Nowitzki on the defensive end could be seen as a reason for the Mavs to stay away.
Whether or not the Mavs land either one of these big names, expect them to be active to find a starting small forward due to Shawn Marion‘s time as a starter and possibly in Dallas at an end. Also, even with Samuel Dalembert and Brandan Wright under contract, the Mavs will most likely look to add another big to either come off the bench or compete for the starting spot.
