Dallas Mavericks’ GM Donnie Nelson on the Mavs’ interest in Andrew Bynum from the Dallas Morning News,
We’re happy with the 15 that we’ve got … You never say never in this league, but that would be a long to long-long-long shot if that happened
Interest in Bynum has seem to be exaggerated as he has not been signed by any team to this point after being waived by the Chicago Bulls. There were reports that eights teams were interested in Bynum; the Mavs, Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, and Los Angeles Clippers were teams mentioned.
It comes to no surprise that Nelson would down play any interest in Bynum. You don’t usually hear a GM talk about wanting to bring in a player while his roster is currently full.
Bynum has death with knee issues over the bulk of his carrier, yet that isn’t the biggest concern around Bynum.
Many question his motivation to actually want to play basketball, which may be the reason the 7 foot Bynum hasn’t latched on to a roster yet.
In 24 games for the Cavs, Bynum has averaged 8.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks while shooting 41.9 % from the field in 20 minutes.
Bynum holds career averages of 11.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks.
The Dallas Mavericks currently have Samuel Dalembert, Brandan Wright, DeJuan Blair, and Bernard James at the center position.
With Dalembert’s improved play, seeing Bynum as a Mav may really be a “Long Long Long Shot.”
