Mavericks to Sign Troy Murphy and Waive Eddy Curry (Dallas Mavericks 2012-2013)

Multiple sources are confirming the Mavericks will sign power forward Troy Murphy and release center Eddy Curry to make room.  The 6′ 11″ Murphy had a solid career with the Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers with  career highs of over 15 points and nearly 12 rebounds but the last three years has played limited minutes with three different teams.  Murphy’s game is likened somewhat to Dirk Nowtizki’s in that he is an excellent outside shooter and has a career 3-point average of 39%.

Curry played in two games for the Mavericks amassing 11 points and 7 rebounds in L.A. but was not a factor in Utah.

In my opinion, releasing Curry rather than Dominique Jones is a big mistake.  Curry needs more time to return to form, that is certain…but with Dirk out and the injury history of Chris Kaman, Brendan Wright, Elton Brand and Murphy, having another big is better than keeping an extra guard who has not shown he deserves time more than any of the other guards on the roster.   The fact that DoJo’s contract is guaranteed is an understandable deterrent but at some point you have to be realistic about contingency plans.
