NBA Free Agency Kicks Off With a Whimper

I was one of many who woke-up this morning expecting there to be news of NBA signings, player movements, or even maybe a trade. Sadly the only thing out there is rumors, varying reports and opinions of “pros” and random conjecture on the subject. w

For the Mavericks reports are that Mark Cuban was in New York to begin talking to Jason Kidd about resigning with the team. I would say there is about an 80% chance that Kidd comes back to Dallas. I don’t see any other team offering to pay Kidd what Dallas will offer and he seems to like playing in Dallas. If not then I would say that odds are there will at least be a sign and trade. Though who the Mavericks would want from the Knicks I have no idea. David Lee is a nice player but what position does he play with Dirk on the floor? I doubt the Knicks would be willing to move Nate Robertson and even if they were, would the Mavericks want another Jason Terry? Maybe Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries or Al Jefferson but none of those players would be considered impact players. I also wouldn’t expect the Mavericks to take on a bad contract in a sign and trade with the Knicks just to get something for Kidd.

So who else does Dallas have an opportunity to work a sign and trade with. My suspicion would be Cleveland. The Cavs would love to have a Kidd/Shaq/LeBron core and are clearly desperate to win a title this upcoming season while they still have LeBron guaranteed to be in their lineup. So who gets included from Cleveland? My guess would be Anderson Varajeo and perhaps they could pry Mo Williams from them somehow. If the Mavs lose Kidd then they MUST find a quality point guard who will sign for the mid-level exception… good luck with that.

For now all we can do is sit and wait and hope for some news, hopefully some big news that shows that Cuban and Donnie Nelson have a clue about what they are doing. I am seriously beginning to wonder though, if that is the case especially with their latest “European Vacation” version of the NBA draft.
